Heart Conditions from Energy Drinks?
Research shows that drinking energy drinks can lead to serious heart problems. The International Journal of Cardiology recently published results from a study that found that those who consume more than two energy drinks per day are more likely to experience heart problems, for instance, palpitations.
The cardiology study examined data from patients in a South Australian emergency room between 2014 and 2015 who complained of heart issues. The research found that 36 percent of the patients had consumed an energy drink within 24 hours of going to the hospital. In fact, some of the patients even consumed high amounts of energy drinks: between 8 to 12 bottles/cans. Not surprisingly, the patients who drank more energy drinks experienced more frequent and intense heart palpitations.
Energy drinks are becoming increasingly popular, especially among adolescents and young adults. For example, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 31 percent of 12-17 year olds consume energy drinks on a regular basis. And for young adults, those aged 18-24, this number is even higher at 34 percent. The amount of energy drinks consumed among people in these age groups is concerning, especially when the drink is mixed with alcohol. Moreover, examining the addictive properties of energy drinks is also something that needs to continue to be addressed.
