Surprisingly enough, it is completely legal to post a picture of drugs on social media. Because of this, many drug dealers are using code words and selling drugs such as codeine, prescription medications, and marijuana on popular social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Most often, drug dealers will post a picture of a particular drug on a social media site and hashtag it with the name of the drug and watch and wait for people to search that hashtag. Dealers then post a phone number and wait for the customers to contact them. Once the drugs are ordered, a pick up/drop off is scheduled or the dealer ships the drugs directly to the customer’s doorstep.
Drug users are increasingly using this method to purchase illegal drugs because it is so convenient. Obviously, there are dangers involved. There is no guarantee that you are receiving a drug that doesn’t contain fillers or synthetic materials, or other additionally harmful substances. But despite these risks, this method of obtaining drugs over social media is dramatically on the rise.
For most of us, it seems shocking that posting pictures of drugs and advertising them for sale online is legal. But, the process only becomes illegal once a transaction is made/paid for. If this is done privately, it is difficult for police to catch the dealers as well as the customers. Sadly, because of drug being sold over social media, more drugs are coming into our cities and communities.
